Beneath a Dead City released!
Beneath a Dead City, the colony sim / story generator has been released! Huzzah and all.
I've always been a big fan of Dwarf Fortress and Rimworld, and I was always really impressed with how those games worked as story-generators. They're concerned with simulating everything (combat, relationships, building, management) well enough that interesting stories - the kind you'd tell a friend - emerge from the playspace. I'm trying to apply that to this game, perhaps on an abbreviated or focused sort of perspective. Can the elements of the story be generated directly, instead of emerging from the simulation and getting connected in the player's mind? I'm drawing heavy inspiration from games like Sunless Seas (storylets), DotAGE (antagonist domains), and Dungeon World (fail forward) for ways to piece together story fragments into a coherent whole. This alpha version doesn't have much of that yet, but it did lay the foundation of it. I think the gameplay loops at 1-minute, 10-minute, and 1-hour scales are working well, and it's a great base to build off of in the future! Check it out and let me know what you think :)

Been following this one for a while, you could use some full screen art to set the mood a bit before jumping into narrative screens. Something that tells me who the characters are and what motivates them. Still Cool Project!
Thanks! Eventually, the player will get to pick four of seven or eight possible heroes / classes when they start a new game, and all te heroes will display their personality and (maybe?) a backstory trait or two, somewhat like what Rimworld does. Maybe some cooler artwork during those intro "Hero Decision" screens would be fun too!
Appreciate the kind words :)
Feel free do DM me directly if you want me to try a new version. Sometimes unless it's a DM I don't see there is something new!
