Version 0.5 released!
Hello all! I've just posted the 0.5 update for Beneath a Dead City! Lots of cool things going into this one.
The two major features for this update were to add job skills (and experience gain), and to add Domains into the game. Picture Domains as something like gods, but more abstract and broad. And more capricious. They are personifications (deifications?) of concepts, and they are here to mess you up. The first four Domains I have planned are War, Ice, Delerium, and Fear, although only War has been implemented so far. The game extends beyond the conquering of the Dark Tower now - that now kicks off the domain system. Domains will be huge drivers of the proc gen story, casting their favor on some heroes and trying to kill others. They will sponsor Threats, which will be long story arcs with new decisions, options, and upgrades for your heroes.
Eventually, one of the four random domains assigned to a game will try to bring about an apocalypse - the same one that wiped out the dead city centuries ago. Your job will be to find clues and stop the second end of the world. For now, War will just spam spawn goblins at you.
Changelog:
- Heroes now have skills for farming, smithing, woodcutting, mining, foraging, brewing, researching, building, repairing, alchemy, and filling out paperwork. (Tough life in the guild, lots of paperwork.) These skills determine how quickly each of those tasks occur.
- Skills are rated 0 (novice) to 5 (master) and will change job time from 150% - 50% time to complete the job.
- Heroes gain experience each time they perform a task.
- Added a new Astrology screen, showing the relative positions of each Domain
- Added a Stargazing job, which uses the Research skill. Takes place at a claimed Dark Tower lair and reveals the sign of one Domain
- Revived the storyteller system.
- Added a new story arc War Rising. Conquer the invading goblin armies or else War grows more powerful.
- Added goblins and goblin mushroom buildings. Goblin mushrooms spawn goblins but may be destroyed (unlike normal lairs).
- Fixed a bug where the tile exploration queue was ordered incorrectly
- Fixed a bug where a specific building / mountain placement could cause incorrect pathfinding bugs
- Added scroll bars for the Job Manager and Quests screen
- Display more than 3 units in the "Units Inside" info box
- Don't allow claiming unexplored lairs
- Explore around lairs on claiming them
- Hide monsters moving through or into unexplored tiles
- Fixed a bug where one hero beating up another could lead to an infinite loop and hang, as the defeated and knocked-out hero believed they were still under attack
- Redid the danger level formula for smarter quest assignment. Heroes act a bit more cautious with higher level lairs
- Added a scrollbar to the Decision Screen post-decision text.
- Fixed a bug where Defense jobs on guild buildings could cause a crash.
- Buffed the Black Knight's accuracy. Nerfed the Warrior's base damage.
- Replaced the title screen image with one that looks worse. The old one was traced over an genAI image. The new one is hand-drawn, and it'll look better in later updates.
- Fixed a bug where removing a building stopped building names from displaying in the future.
- Fixed a bug where rangers become obsessed with buying excessive numbers of bows.
- Fixed a bug where placing a Warehouse had an incorrect "building ghost" sprite, making placement hard.
Next up - the Ice domain, new special abilities for combat, and more! Happy questing!
